This week Dominic is gunning for three traders: a building duo who turned an elderly woman’s dream house into a freezing nightmare, and a roofing company whose ‘lifetime guarantees’ barely last a season. First up is 84 year old Betty Hall, whose life turned upside down when her husband died seven years ago. Betty’s son Trevor was also dealing with the break-up of his marriage, so together mother and son decided to change their lives for the better by pooling their resources and bucking a ramshackle old house in the country. Almost a year after work on their dream home started - after months of delays and having paid substantially more than the contract price – work ground to a halt. Betty and Trevor have been left without central heating or a fully functioning kitchen, with incomplete bedrooms and bathrooms, and have spent the past few months sleeping on sofas downstairs. Dom’s mission is to demand answers from the two builders responsible, both of whom are keen to pass the buck. Meanwhile, the builder Chris and designer Pippa have a tricky task on their hands – not only do they have to make the house shipshape in two weeks, they have to incorporate all of Betty and Trevor’s treasured possessions, as well as a lifetime of memories. Also in our sights is a roofing company whose working practices have to be seen to be believed. Luckily our secret cameras are able to catch them in the act. But that doesn’t stop the boss of the company fighting his corner when Dom catches up with him….
Always get a proper written JCT contract signed by both parties and be extra careful about the scheduled payment terms. Avoid giving large deposits up front, 10% - 15% maximum should do, pay using a bank transfer or cheque not cash, and don't pay money for work before they've reached the pre agreed stages of completion. Pre agree a significant payment which you can hold back until they've finished the job and taken care of any snagging.
